03 / 10 The 10 Practices of Il Il Shin
How Do You Meditate When Your Mind Won’t Stop?
Why a wandering mind is not failure and every return is a repetition.
One of the most common things beginners say about meditation is:
“I can’t do it. My mind won’t stop.”
Good.
Now you know why we practice.
Meditation is not about magically turning off thought.
In Il Il Shin, meditation is mental training.
We train the mind much the same way we train the body.
Through repetition.
You sit.
You notice the breath.
Your mind wanders.
You notice.
You return.
Then it wanders again.
You return again.
That is not failure.
That is the exercise.
Imagine going to the gym, doing one repetition, and becoming frustrated because the weight moved back to where it started.
The return is part of the repetition.
Meditation works the same way.
The mind leaves.
You bring it back.
Each return develops awareness.
Over time, something important begins to happen.
You start noticing thoughts before automatically following them.
A thought appears:
“I should send that angry text.”
You notice it.
“I don’t feel like exercising.”
You notice it.
“I always mess this up.”
You notice it.
A thought can exist without becoming an instruction.
That is one of the most practical things meditation can teach us.
Begin Simply
Sit upright but relaxed.
Let your shoulders soften.
Allow your hands to rest comfortably.
Breathe naturally.
Pay attention to one inhale.
Then one exhale.
Eventually your mind will go somewhere else.
When you realize it has wandered, simply return.
Do not criticize yourself.
Do not restart.
Do not score the meditation.
Just come back.
That return is enough.
Practice today
Sit quietly for two minutes.
That is all.
Notice your breathing.
When your mind leaves, return.
At the end, do not ask:
“Did I stop thinking?”
Ask:
“Did I notice when I left?”
If the answer is yes, you practiced.
Reflection
What thoughts repeatedly pulled at your attention?
Were they useful?
Were they simply noise?
You do not have to believe every thought.
You do not have to follow every thought.
You can learn to notice.
Pause.
Return.
Every return is a repetition.
